Family history guides

Short, practical guides to recording your family history — names, traditions, moving your tree and asking the people who remember.

• What is a nasab? The Arabic chain of names, explained — A nasab records a person’s lineage inside their name — son of, son of. Here is how it works and how to keep it in a family tree.
• How naming traditions record a family — Patronymics, double surnames, initials and family name first: how different cultures carry family history in a name.
• Move your family tree from Ancestry, MyHeritage or FamilySearch — Bring your existing tree to Kinealogy with a GEDCOM file — the standard every genealogy service can export — and take it with you again whenever you like.
• How to interview your elders about family history — The questions to ask grandparents and older relatives, and an easy way to collect their answers before the memories are lost.
